UNION COUNTY, South Carolina (WYFF) - Vandalism at an Upstate church is under investigation and deputies are checking to see if it connected to a double-homicide nearby
The Union Co Sheriff's Office said Buffalo United Methodist Church was vandalized overnight Monday.
Union County Sheriff David Taylor said Bibles were torn apart, furniture was damaged and swastikas and Satanic phrases such as "Christ is dead, Satan is alive" were spray-painted on the walls. There was a baby doll in a toilet covered in red paint, and a rabbit head from a costume on the floor also with red paint.
Choir robes hanging in a closet were also damaged with paint, and the cushions of some chairs were slashed.
Investigators said there was no sign of forced entry.
The vandalism was discovered early Tuesday morning by the pastor. The church is having Vacation Bible School this week.
Taylor said investigators are trying to determine if there is any connection to the double-homicide in the county. Butch Parker and his wife, Gretchen, were found dead in their home July 22.
Jeremy Moody and his wife, Christine, are charged in the deaths. They have identified themselves as members of a skinhead gang and said they killed Parker because he was a registered sex offender and they had plans to kill others on the registry.
