What we eat: Deli food calorie content

By Jessica Oakley

Wichita, Kansas, May 7, 2008 – Jared Fogel did it. He lost 245 pounds by eating Subway sandwiches every day for a year. But before you head out for a turkey on wheat, you’re in for a rude awakening.

Registered dietician Jennifer Winter says we tend to double the amount of food we eat, when we think we’re eating healthy – especially with salads and sandwiches.

“If the consumer adds too much mayonnaise or salad dressing, or other additives like nuts and cheeses, they’re adding a lot more calories,” Winter said.

Take Subway for example, where they offer eight different six-inch subs at six grams of fat or less.  Stray away from those eight, and you’ll find some of Subway’s most fattening sandwiches, like the six-inch chicken bacon and ranch (580 cal) or the meat ball marinara (560 cal). If you order a foot-long, you’ll double those calories.  Think healthier by turning any sandwich into a salad. It cuts out the calories by cutting out the carbs.

Over at Quizno’s you’ll find a heftier sandwich. A small classic Italian sets you back 520 calories. Order the large and its 1,370 calories.  The tuna melt sub with dressing and cheese is 2,900 calories; the equivalent of three foot-long roast beef and cheese sandwiches from Subway.

For those who think Chipotle is the way to go, your calorie count is in your own hands. A chicken burrito with black beans, rice, green salsa, cheese and sour cream packs 1,169 calories.  But of the four meats you can choose from, chicken is your best bet.
