KINGMAN, Kansas -- Some local Head Start programs are taking a big hit from the federal sequestration.
At the end of July, the Kansas Children's Service League will close the doors to facilities in three of the thirteen counties it serves.
Eight Head start staff persons will be laid off and 43 Head Start children in Kingman, Pratt and Stafford counties will no longer receive services.
Clifford Stuck relies on Early Head Start visits for his 17-month-old daughter.
"The year she's been in it, [she] has been able to recite her ABCs, 123s," said Stuck. "It's quite the learning process, it's quite interactive with the children. I think it's a catastrophe that we're losing it. It's heartbreaking."
Kansas Children's Service League says it lost more than $200,000 from its budget because of sequestration.
"It's disappointing, it's very disappointing," said Stuck." The children in our community alone need this kind of support. They need this kind of education. Without it, they don't have anything here. "
School districts, special education cooperatives and child care centers are working closely with the Kansas Children's Service League to find placement for the children.
