KINGMAN, Kansas — Brett Seacat was found guilty of murder on Tuesday.
"We're pleased with today's jury verdict," said Prosecutor Amy Hanley. "Our goal throughout this was to seek justice for Vashti and for her family."
And while prosecutors gave their victory speeches, Vashti's family says it has mixed emotions.
"My family's condolences go out to the Seacat family," says Vashti's brother, Rich Forrest. "They have suffered a loss. They have lost a daughter-in-law and (Brett) a son. And I feel they are victims just as much as our family is."
Vashti's mother feels the same loss. Brett Seacat was a member of the family.
"We've known Brett since he was sixteen," explains Vashti's mom, Julie Hostetler. "So he's been a part of the family since then. And so it was a two-edged sword. A double loss. But justice was served. We're very glad that justice was served."
Brett Seacat will now go to prison. Likely until he is a very, very old man.
Still, the family says this day is not really about Brett Seacat.
It's about Vashti and her legacy and her two little boys.
"What do we say about Vashti? Who was she? That's easy," says Hostetler. "Kind, beautiful, compassionate, warm. Great sense of humor. Just a beautiful spirit."
