Downtown Wichita explosions only a drill

By Paul Petitte

Wichita, Kansas. Oct. 18, 2007 – Friday morning, expect to hear loud booms and a scene that looks like a major disaster in Downtown Wichita. Police, firefighters, EMS and hospital officials will be engaged in a full scale disaster, all for practice.

The disaster simulation is designed to prepare local first responders for the worse case scenario – whether it is from nature’s wrath or a terrorist attack.

“Initially it's going to be chaos, there is a lot of people lying around in the street, a lot of fires going on, smoke, people yelling and screaming,” says John Holgerson, CEO of Rescue Training Associates.

The two day long drill involves nearly 800 people and features partially collapsed buildings, real explosions and mock trapped victims.

If you plan to be in Downtown Wichita Friday through Sunday morning, you will want to avoid the area around Washington and Waterman. Those streets will be closed off.

If you’d like to watch the drill, the best vantage point is at English and Waterman.
