Rock legend makes automotive history in Wichita

By Lauragail Locke

WICHITA, Kansas, Nov. 14, 2007 - It's not every day a rock legend stops by Marquee Motorcars in Wichita to have work done on his classic car.

"He's awesome," Jonathan Goodwin, Marquee Motorcars owner, said. "He flew from another state Tuesday night to be here so that's dedication."

After all, Neil Young wouldn't stop by for a normal oil change. He's here to make automotive history as Goodwin transforms Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental into a green, fuel-efficient machine.

"This is the very first concept of its kind that we know of," Goodwin said.

When Goodwin is done with Young's car, it will be run by electricity. But what makes it unique is this car will have a bio-diesel generator. It will actually charge the batteries as the car is running.

"We're removing the drive train that got 10 miles to the gallon," Goodwin said. "We're replacing it with a drive train that gets 100 miles to the gallon."

It'll take about 45 days to complete the work. When Young picks up his Lincoln Continental in January, it'll have the same exterior with a whole new power source purring underneath.
