DERBY, Kansas, Dec. 17, 2007 -- Two Burlington Northern Santa Fe workers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries but they were expected to be okay following a train collision Monday morning.
Investigators from Burlington Northern-Santa Fe were on the scene as of early Monday afternoon taking pictures and trying to evaluate the cause of the collision. Initial reports are that one train was transitioning from one set of tracks to the other but had not fully cleared the tracks when the approaching train struck some of its cars.
There was an initial concern that one of the derailed cars was carrying hazardous material but that turned out not to be the case.
"The coal train, even though it's a Union Pacific locomotive, it had a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe crew on it," said Trooper Gary Warner, Kansas Highway Patrol. "Now the Union Pacific train that was traveling in the other direction is just a local train."
Trooper's say there are about nine cars off of the tracks and they expect cleanup to at least take the rest of the day.
Because of the cleanup, K-15 southbound was shut down but is now open with one lane of traffic.
