Legislature to see proposal to condemn gangsta rap

By Josh Witsman

TOPEKA, Kansas, Jan. 13, 2008 (AP) - A Kansas legislator plans to introduce a resolution condemning gangsta rap this session. Representative Peggy Mast is doing so at the urging of Topeka activist Sonny Scroggins, who says he is a fan of earlier rap but has a problem with more recent lyrics.

Scroggins, a former disc jockey, says he is concerned about profanity in current raps and lyrics that demean women.

Mast, an Emporia Republican, says she wants to send a message that Kansas does not approve of gangsta rap.

The Recording Industry Association of America says a legislative resolution condemning gangsta rap is unusual, although the music has been a target of criticism for years. The association knows of only one other legislative condemnation of gangsta rap -- one in Connecticut.
