Legislators look to revisit topics in 2009

By Jessica Oakley

TOPEKA, Kansas, May 9, 2008 – Just two days after the 2008 legislative session came to an end, lawmakers are already looking ahead to next January.

Two proposed coal plants dominated debates this year, leaving many issues still on the table for 2009.

The seats are empty and lawmakers are back at home, but the work in the Statehouse is far from over.

“Issues never die in Topeka,” said Representative Brenda Landwehr.

Knowing that, you can look for lawmakers to take on familiar topics in 2009.

"Health care reform we'll take that up again next year, I think school finance,” said Jim Ward, Assistant House Minority Leader.

"I know a lot of Kansans want action on immigration and I hope the legislature does take tough, affective and reasonable steps to address our immigration crisis,” said Representative Raj Goyle.

"I expect we'll be dealing with energy issues also,” said Senator Phil Journey.

Even though energy took up the most time this past session, lawmakers are expected to face a new round of issues related to coal plants in Kansas.

"We've got coal plants that have been in existence many, many years and their permits are about to come up for renewal,” Landwehr said. “So, some decisions have to be made on energy as a whole.”

Money could very well be another issue next session. Lawmakers faced a tight budget in 2008, and that will continue to be a challenge, especially if the economy takes more hits.

"I think Kansans are under extreme economic stress right now and I think that also is having an influence on the decisions lawmakers are making today,” Journey said.

Keep in mind the upcoming election could have a huge impact on vote results next session. All 40 senators and 125 House members are up for re-election this November. So, they’ll have to win to return to Topeka next January.
