Teen boys arrested in acid bomb spree

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, May 12, 2008 – Five teenaged boys are in custody after setting off a series of acid bombs, including throwing one of the devices at two young girls selling drinks at a lemonade stand.

Just after Noon Friday, Wichita police swarmed a typically quiet northwest Wichita neighborhood.

“There were two victims in this case, neither of them were hurt, both ten-year-old girls who had set up lemonade stand nearby,” said Gordon Bassham with the Wichita Police Department.

The girls’ father didn’t want to talk on camera today, but said a car full of boys drove by and asked what they were selling then threw an acid bomb into a nearby storm drain.

Acid bombs are simple devices made by putting common household chemicals into a plastic bottle. The chemical reaction causes the bottle to explode.

Officers caught up with the boys soon after and arrested two 13-year-olds, a 14-year-old and 15-year old.

In all, the teens struck five locations all in close proximity, including a mailbox in on Wichita neighborhood on Thursday night and they left a bomb at a playground.

Luckily no major damage was done and no one was injured.
