Wichita doctor's son victim of Ga. homicide

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, May 13, 2008 – The son of a well-known Wichita cardiologist was murdered over the weekend.

David Reader, the son of Dr. Whitney Reader, was killed Sunday in Augusta Georgia.

Twenty-six-year-old David Reader grew up in Wichita. By becoming the lead Cellist in the Augusta Symphony, he was finally achieving the goals that he’d worked so hard for.

"He was quite accomplished and a very sweet person, good person,” said Augusta Symphony Executive Director Sandra Self.

Reader began his musical career playing piano as a boy in Kansas. He had just completed his first season with the August Symphony.

“He had such a fresh look at what music is and what it can be,” Self said.

But his music, his career and his life were all cut short over the weekend.

"I ran to him to see what was wrong with him and he had blood on him,” said Lorretta Broomer Harris who found Reader.

Reader was found shot to death in his car early Sunday morning.

"I just dropped my head and walked away because I knew tears were coming later,” said Broomer Harris. “We could hardly sleep the rest of the night.”

Deputies believe Reader was in the Augusta, GA neighborhood to buy drugs after a concert. After going door-to-door, deputies identified Anthony Gerome Joe Jr. as a suspect.

He’s wanted on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, police arrested 16-year-old Tyreese Finey who will be charged as an adult with criminal attempted armed robbery and in the murder of David Reader.

KSN will have more on this story including an interview with Reader’s father tonight at 10 p.m.
