WICHITA, Kansas, May 14, 2008 – As police continue looking for the person who shot at a Wichita police officer back in March, they have received a chilling piece of evidence: a letter claiming responsibility for the shooting.
A letter found at a southeast Wichita apartment complex was brought to officers at a patrol station.
"There is evidence contained within this letter that we believe this person knows a lot about the shooting,” said Lt. Jeff Easter with WPD.
But the writer of the letter didn’t stop there. They went on to threaten additional officers.
“This is an unusual circumstance,” Easter said. “We've seen graffiti where officer’s names are painted up and that gang members are targeting officers or people that phone in threats to specific officers. But typically that can be traced back to a ticket or something. In this particular instance in the 18 years I've been here I have not see this type of threatening letter come in like this.”
Police won’t comment on the specifics in the letter, but say they are doing forensic testing on the document. They also say they have alerted officers to be on heightened awareness.
