TOPEKA, Kansas, May 15, 2008 (AP) - State university officials are proposing tuition increases that would generate at least $22 million  over the next academic year. The universities would use the money for faculty salary increases and for ongoing programs.

Wichita State is proposing an increase of 5.9 percent for students from Kansas but only 5 percent for non-Kansans. Officials say the lower increase for nonresidents will help the university remain competitive with out-of-state schools.

Fort Hays State is proposing a tuition increase of 5.5 percent.

Tuition at Pittsburg State would increase by up to 5.8 percent.

Emporia State officials don't have final figures, but increases are likely to range between 4.9 percent and 6 percent.

The Kansas Board of Regents expects to vote on the proposals next month.
