Kansas senators vote for farm bill

Senator Sam Brownback

By Jessica Oakley

WASHINGTON, D.C. May 15, 2008 (AP) -- Senators Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback both voted today for the 290 billion dollar farm bill, despite cuts they say will hurt the state's farmers.

The Senate passed the measure 81-15 one day after the House approved it on a 318-106 vote.

Both votes are more than enough to override a threatened veto from President Bush. The White House says the bill gives too much money to wealthy farmers at a time of soaring crop prices.

The Kansas Republicans say they are disappointed that the bill cuts $313 million in direct payments and nearly $6 billion out of the crop insurance program.

They praise the bill for offering tax relief and money for cellulosic ethanol.

The bill also includes tax breaks to help residents of Greensburg rebuild after last year's devastating tornado.
