WICHITA, Kansas, June 6, 2008 – On the heels of Thursday night’s meeting between Democratic rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, talks of a dream ticket continue. But with the choice of vice president still up in the air, local lawmakers have not ruled out a possible Kansas vice president.
State Representative Raj Goyle believes that Sebelius would be a perfect choice for Senator Obama.
"She actually has a proven track record of what Senator Obama has talked about; about bringing change in a non-partisan, bi-partisan fashion, reaching across party lines on education, health care and alternative energy,” said Goyle.
Local party officials are quickly uniting behind a possible Obama-Sebelius ticket.
"It would be huge for the Democratic party in this state to have a Kansan running for vice president,” said Jason Dilts with the Sedgwick County Democratic Party. “It would be wonderful for all of the people we have on our ticket this year.”
Sebelius is a red state governor with an excellent post-partisan record. But there are concerns about the dismal seven Electoral College votes that Kansas carries. And the question has been asked: Why take Sebelius over Clinton?
"Putting a woman on the ticket makes a lot of sense,” Dilts said. ”If it's not going to be Hillary Clinton, I think it ought to be another woman and Kathleen Sebelius stands out.”
In a statement released Wednesday, the governor said, “There has been no discussion from the Obama campaign with me or anyone else on my team about serving as vice president.”
But on the Republican side, there has been discussion between nominee John McCain and Kansas Senator Sam Brownback.
"I'm sure he'd be honored if he was selected,” said Kelly Arnold with the Sedgwick County Republican Party. “I know his name is on the short list.”
With two Kansas politicians mentioned as possible vice presidential candidates, it gives the state a strong presence on the national political scene.
