WICHITA, Kansas, June 16, 2008 - For folks in Iowa, raging flood waters have become a nightmare.
"This is the most incredible flood we've ever had here," flood victim Jim Sheere said. "It's terrible."
Swollen rivers and submerged towns now make up the landscape for much of the state.
"People have lived here all of their lives and they have never seen flooding like this," Red Cross worker Allen Crabtree said.
In fact, experts say this historic flood has submerged areas of the state which have never flooded before making this disaster a lesson to all of us.
"Everyone needs a flood policy even if they're in a low risk area, because it can and does happen as we've seen," Wichita insurance agent Steve Rogers said.
Rogers points to national statistics which show that 25 percent of flood insurance claims come from areas with low to moderate risk of flooding. For those in the flood plain, they have a 26 percent chance of flooding during the term of their mortgage compared to a chance of fire being just nine percent.
"Your homeowners insurance will not cover you for flooding," Rogers said. "Yeah you really are on your own if you don't have that flood coverage."
Rogers believes like many in Iowa, Kansans just don't think about flooding. However, now some say Iowa shows that floods can happen anywhere, making flood insurance a necessity for everyone. A few hundred dollars a year that could save your home and investment from being washed away.
