Hawker dousing claims of outsourcing plans

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas June 24, 2008 -- A union representative for workers at Hawker Beechcraft claims the company is planning to outsource jobs to Mexico, but the company says those claims are not true.

Officials with the Machinists union say they've obtained internal documents from Hawker Beechcraft code named "Project Pelican."

"It outlines what they said they'd never do to move final assembly somewhere other than here in Wichita," said IAM spokesperson Robert Wood.

Hawker Beechcraft's spokesperson Andrew Broom says that was an internal proposal created in May of 2007. He says the company is not moving forward with that plan.

Instead, Broom says the company opened a small facility in Mexico in October. Initially it would have 250 jobs with the possibility to grow to 650 positions.  He says the company has been very open about that move.

Broom claims the new plant south of the border has had no impact on Wichita. He points to the fact that the company has hired more than 1,200 people over the past year in Wichita and says they are hiring to fill 700 positions.

Wood says he doesn't buy that. He says the company is right on track for following "Project Pelican" step-by-step.

"The taxpayers in Wichita and Kansas have invested a lot in those companies and the first thing we need is honesty here," Wood said.

The union is currently in negotiations for contracts that are up August 3rd. Wood says those documents will be used in the talks.
