WICHITA, KS, July 1, 2008 – Sixty-five burglary victims may now get some of their property back.
Sedgwick County investigators say they've busted a big burglary ring and recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property.
Becky and Pete Reynolds’s west Sedgwick County home was burglarized the day after Memorial Day. The thieves made off with their stereo, computer, TV and family heirlooms.
“My husband, his mothers wedding ring, that's gone, and obviously that's very, very old and we can't replace that and so things like that are the toughest," said Becky Reynolds.
Five people have been arrested so far in the case including, 44-year-old Brian Holmes, 34-year-old Shane Dutton, 21-year-old Dylan Newby and 21-year-old Ryan Muzzy.
"This was a group of people that for several months were operating somewhat successfully, but that same success is what brought them to our attention," said Undersheriff Robert Hinshaw of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators say they saw a 17% spike in residential burglaries within the past couple months.
The thieves targeted mostly middle and upper middle class neighborhoods, and seemed to be especially brazen.
"We believe that they used pry bars to enter the residences and it's during the day time so you would think it's easier to be seen," said Lt. Barry Von Fang of the Wichita Police Department.
The Reynolds found about 15% of their property, but didn’t find that wedding ring. It's likely gone forever, along with their sense of security.
