WICHITA, Kansas July 2, 2008 -- Another young woman is shot and killed in the city’s second murder in only two days.
Police were called to the 3400 block of E. Munger in the Plainview area around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Twenty-three-year-old DeShonda Walker was the youngest of four kids, but today her family is grieving.
"That's my baby girl, that's my baby," said Teresa Walker, DeShonda's mother.
Police are looking for 27-year-old Albert Thomas. They say he and DeShonda got into a fight Saturday night over a parking space. They were together as friends Tuesday night, but early Wednesday morning that changed.
"They had been life-long friends,” said Lt. Ken Landwehr of the Wichita Police Department. “They grew up across the street from each other, but the argument escalated to gunfire."
Albert Thomas's uncle didn't want his name revealed, but says he's shocked at what happened.
"I'm surprised we've know those people all our lives,” he said.
Thomas' uncle says he hasn't talked to his nephew and only knows what he's heard from police.
"Everybody looses in this type of thing: they loose their beautiful little girl and we loose our son."
Now, in a neighborhood where everyone considered each other family, there's a big divide.
"She didn't mess with anybody,” said DeShonda’s mother, Teresa Walker. “I don't know why that boy wanted to kill her."
The victim's brother, Dontae Walker, says he called his sister “baby doll” because of her beauty.
"My sister posed no threat to that guy,” Dontae said. “He's a coward. There are a lot of men down here and instead he pulled a gun on a woman that weighed 125 pounds."
If you know any information as to the whereabouts of Albert Thomas, call 911 or Crimes Stoppers at 267-2111.
The family of DeShonda Walker says they don't have enough money for burial expenses. A memorial fund has been set up in her name at Emprise Bank 2323 S. Hydraulic Wichita, KS 67211.
