Jail deputy charged in inmate beating case

WICHITA, Kansas, July 2, 2008 – A Sedgwick County Jail deputy has been charged with battery in an incident involving inmate Edgar Richard February 15, 2008.

Manual J. Diaz, Jr., 25, was charged Wednesday in Sedgwick County District Court with aggravated battery.

Richard, who suffers from mental disorders, sustained several serious physical injuries as a result of a fight with Diaz. He was put on life support and spent 108 days in the hospital.

He has since been released from the jail and placed in an adult care facility. His family has filed a lawsuit against the jail.

Diaz has his first appearance Wednesday and a preliminary hearing has been set for July 16, 2008.
