BWCU customers warned of e-mail scam

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, July 2, 2008 – Boeing Wichita Credit Union customers are being targeted in a phishing scam.

Kevin White was immediately suspicious when he received an e-mail.

"It caught my attention because I used to have an account with them,” White said.

But since White is KSN’s Webmaster, he knew exactly how to investigate its legitimacy.

He first checked to see if it was safe to click the link.

"My browser changed the link to an IP address, so then I knew that it didn’t seem right,” White said. “Normally when you go to a banking Web site, the address up on the bar is that Web site."

After more investigating, White was able to track that IP address to Asia Pacific, a company out of Thailand.

Kevin then contacted Boeing Wichita Credit Union as did dozens of other customers. The company's interim CEO told KSN they found out about the scam when their phones started ringing.

"This is not a legitimate e-mail from the credit union,” said Wade Bruendl with Boeing Wichita Credit Union.

The fake page looks nearly identical to the real Boeing Wichita Credit Union log in page and asks customers for their member number and PIN. That information would allow scammers to penetrate your on line bank account.

"If the member has given the person information on the Web site, they need to contact us immediately so we can help protect their accounts,” Bruendl said.

Bruendl says as of Wednesday afternoon, they had no reports of anybody’s information being compromised.
