Abortion foes question need to rewrite Kansas laws

By Jessica Oakley

TOPEKA, Kansas, July 3, 2008 (AP) - A grand jury's suggestion that Kansas needs to rewrite its abortion laws is getting a cool reception from abortion opponents.

The Sedgwick County grand jury has declined to indict Dr. George Tiller over allegations of wrongdoing at his Wichita clinic. Tiller is among a few U.S. doctors who perform late-term abortions.

The grand jury said that while it had questions about some late-term procedures, state law isn't written clearly enough. The grand jury said it's likely that Tiller won't ever face criminal charges unless state laws change.

But anti-abortion Republican Rep. Lance Kinzer, of Olathe, said he believes the law already is clear. The head of Kansans for Life, Mary Kay Culp, agrees.
