Father talks about accident that injured his family of 11

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, July 4, 2008 – An early morning car accident in southwest Sedgwick County sent 12 people to the hospital, 11 of who are all from the same family who survived the accident with only minor injuries.

Being hit by a pick-up truck overnight was not the ending the Wohlgemuths and their nine children expected after a fun night at the Starlight Drive-In.

"A kind of pre-Fourth of July celebration, and we were coming home about 3:00 a.m.” said father, Jason Wohlgemuth.

That’s when a man in his 30’s, driving a truck, failed to yield the right of way at K-42 and 135th St. W. striking the Suburban with sleeping children inside.

“You just pray that everyone is OK and today's been a good day, everyone is fine,” Jason said.

He can reflect now as one of his children plays at their Milton, Kansas home.

"The ones that are home with me now, they seem to be in good spirits, concerned that I'm hurt, mom's hurt, brother and sister are still being watched,” he said.

Tristan and Aubrey Wohgemuth remain at Wichita hospitals for observation, but things could have been a lot worse.

"It could have cost my kids and my wife and me our lives,” Jason said. “We did our part by making sure everybody was buckled and restrained properly. Life's just way too short to take chances like that.”

Deputies are investigating whether the driver of the pick-up truck was drunk. He was ejected from his vehicle after impact. He is in critical condition at a Via Christi hospital.

"I pray for him. I hope that he's well,” Jason said.

Doctors expect to release the two Wohlgemuth children who remain in the hospital tomorrow.
