Storm flips semis and shuts down interstate

By Josh Witsman

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kansas, July 22, 2008 - For Carrie Hall, it is a drive she will never forget.

"I just started praying Jesus protect us," Heston mother Carrie Hall said. "Jesus protect us."

Hall and her family were headed north on I-135 when they were caught in high wind, hail, and rain. Hall says the hail was so strong it began busting the windows out of her van.

"It just seemed to go on forever and ever, and the van was rocking," Hall said.

As the van kept rocking and windows kept busting, the Heston mother crawled in the very back with her kids.  The whole time Hall believed she was right in the middle of a tornado. While that wasn't the case, the strong storm was enough to blow several semi's over.

"When the truck started going over, I just braced myself on the passenger seat, and I was standing up when it flipped," truck drive Charles England said.

England's semi was just one of four semis that were overturned.  The flipped rigs shut down I-135 for a period of time while crews cleaned up the mess.

The good news is no major injuries were reported.  However, all involved say it will be hard to forget this wicked summer storm.

"It's the most frightening thing I have ever been through," Hall said. "I think my kids will have nightmares. I think they'll be sleeping with me for a while."
