VALLEY CENTER, Kansas, July 23, 2008 – It was small and quick, but a microburst brought near hurricane force winds in the northern part of Sedgwick County Tuesday night. And Valley Center seems to have suffered the worst of it.
It came as quickly as it left, but in the wake of Tuesday’s storm the only thing left of the Dagenhart’s property is their garage roof.
“I looked out the back door and I saw it strung all over and I thought it was the whole garage,” said Chad Earnhardt. “At that time we couldn't go outside because it was still hailing really badly.”
Chad and his family were enjoying a quiet evening when the storm, packing winds of nearly 75 miles per hour, blew through. It wasn’t a tornado, but a microburst that downed power lines and knocked over a total of four semi trucks.
Still, KSN Meteorologist Andrew Kozak says that storm has similar characteristics and deserves similar precautions.
“This is a reason why it's important for people to pay attention to severe thunderstorm warnings in addition to tornado warnings, because the damage that we saw last night could have been on a caliber of a very weak tornado,” said Kozak.
Just one look at the Dagenhardt’s garage is proof of that.
“The thunderstorms that formed yesterday were not really favorable for tornadoes, but strong line winds were possible and that's what we basically warned on,” Kozak said.
