Prosecutors warn of travel scam

By Dana Hertneky

WICHITA, KS, July 23, 2008 -- Several Kansans have been scammed out of possibly thousands of dollars in what prosecutors say is a multi-state travel scam.

Wednesday, Sedgwick County and the state of Kansas announced they have taken legal action against the company.

Prosecutors say you should watch out for an official looking mailing from a company called Elite Escapes.

When opened, the letter says Hertz car rental and United Airlines are joining together to offer you the trip of a lifetime, all you have to do is call a phone number.

"People are in essence always looking for the rainbow and unfortunately what they're finding is they're being deprived of their money," said Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston.

Foulston said callers were lured to the Broadview Hotel in Wichita and told for $2100 to $9000 they could buy rights to discounted travel and vacation packages.

"When these people would go down to this location they would be in essence talked into buying different schemes that would come about on the belief that they would get something for their money,” Foulston explained.  “As it always turns out if it looks too good to be true it probably is."

After the company left Wichita, they headed to a hotel in Overland Park, and that's where investigators caught up with them.

Late Tuesday, members of the Kansas Attorney General's office served Elite Escapes with a temporary restraining order demanding the company cease doing business in Kansas.

The Kansas Attorney General says an investigation that involved the department of consumer affairs in South Carolina, and attorney's general's offices in Missouri, Colorado, Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada, Kentucky, New Mexico, and the Sedgwick county DA's office revealed a "pattern and practice of deceptive and unconscionable practices."

"I have to warn people,” Foulston said.  “These companies are becoming more brazen and bold every day."

Prosecutors say although they may have shut this company down, others are still out there ready take your money.

If you attended an Elite Escapes meeting and believe you might be a victim, call the attorney general's consumer protection division at 1-800-432-2310. Those in Sedgwick County should call 1-800-432-6878.
