Kansas council mulling proposal to lower speed limit

By Jessica Oakley

TOPEKA, Kansas, August 14, 2008 (AP) - An advisory council is mulling over a proposal to reduce the speed limit on some Kansas highways.

The Kansas Energy Council is considering the idea as a way to reduce the state's emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases linked by many scientists to global warming.

The council advises the governor and legislators on energy policy.

Its members have voted to take public comment on a plan to lower the state's top speed limit from 70 mph to 65 mph.

The change would affect about 8 percent of the state's highways.

But the change would have to be approved by the Legislature. And Sen. Janis Lee, a Kensington Democrat who serves on the council, said there'd be strong opposition.
