Wichita, Kansas August 27, 2008- A nightclub that was the scene of the city's latest homicide is no longer in business.
A city inspection sign is posted on the front door of Lightning Joes. It read that no one is allowed inside and the business is closed.
Over the weekend the club was the scene of a murder. But it wasn't the first sign of trouble at the bar. In February it was the scene of another murder.
In the recent past police have expressed frustration with bars where trouble is re-occuring. They say their hands are tied by current laws that are vauge and more than 20 years old.
"Believe me, police officers feel frustrated when people are telling them that and we don't have an ordinance or some sort of legal ramifications to shut those kind of clubs down," said Deputy Police Chief Tom Stoltz.
Now, the club is shut down, but it's not because of violence. This time it's because of code violations. There are noticiable holes in several windows, there's also an entire room without a roof.
Leaders at the Wichita Police Department are currently drafting an ordinance that they plan to take before the city council. They hope that ordinance, if approved, will give them more options when it comes to dealing with a club with repeat problems.
Officers plan to talk to owners of several clubs in town in the coming days and conduct a survey to get their input. The survey will ask for input on ordinance changes, it will also ask for advice on how bar owners have successfully managed a club without crime.
KSN was unable to reach Lightning Joe's manager for a comment.
