Classes canceled in Winfield following bomb threat

By Jessica Oakley

WINFIELD, Kansas, August 28, 2008 – Classes have been canceled at Winfield High School following a bomb threat by telephone Thursday morning.

The threat came to the school just before 10 a.m. Students and staff were evacuated to Stewart Fieldhouse on the Southwestern College Campus.

A bomb sniffing dog is en route from Topeka to perform a search. Once the dog arrives, the search will take about an hour and a half.

Only Winfield High School and Middle Schools are being dismissed. Classes will continue as normal for grades K-6.

Parents may pick students up at Stewart Fieldhouse.

Students and staff will not be allowed into the parking lot to retrieve their cars until 4:00 p.m. or until the parking lot is determined to be safe.
