The Boeing strike begins

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, September 6, 2008 – As the clock struck 12:01 Saturday morning, dozens of Boeing commercial workers hit the picket lines.

An estimated 700 machinists in Wichita, and another 26,000 in Portland and Seattle are striking against what they call hidden language in a contract they voted down Wednesday, which they claim hikes insurance premiums, and does not guard against the outsourcing of work. Boeing calls the offer an "industry leading one."

The strike comes after 48 hours of additional negotiating following the voting down of the contract.

There is no word on when talks might resume.
