Married couple arrested in Salina bank robbery

By Jessica Oakley

SALINA, Kansas, September 8, 2008 – A husband and wife are in custody in connection with a Friday bank robbery in Salina at the Bennington State Bank at 9th and Walnut. And it wasn’t the banks first robbery.

When the Bennington State Bank in downtown Salina was robbed Friday afternoon, police launched a massive manhunt looking for a male suspect in his getaway car.

"We were able to get a picture of the suspect,” said Deputy Chief Carson Mansfield with the Salina Police Department. “We put it out to the news media and a couple of citizens saw it on a Web site and identified who that person was.”

The Salina Police Department credits the cooperation between police, news media and citizens for solving the crime.

Thirty-nine-year-old Dennis Winters and his wife, 37-year-old Antonette were arrested after their vehicle was spotted Saturday night in Dickinson County. It is the same vehicle seen leaving the scene of Friday’s robbery when Dennis Winters allegedly went into the bank, handed the teller a note and left with an undisclosed amount of money.

"It’s too close to home,” one neighbor said. “It's kind of scary."

What makes the robbery even scarier is the fact that it’s the fourth at the bank since 2000.

"Any time we have repeated robberies, we're concerned,” Mansfield said. “We try and work with the banks to reduce the risk."

Dennis and Antonette Winters will make their first appearances in Saline County District Court at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say they recovered some money from Winters, but they aren’t saying how much or how much was stolen total.
