WICHITA, KS, September 9, 2008 -- More than a year after it closed, Park City's Wild West World will breathe new life after all.
The theme park's new owners said Tuesday that they're re-opening next year, bigger and better.
“We definitely have a successful plan on the park and the concert venue,” said Doug Spangler a representative of Florida based AHG, who bought the park. “It's just more a matter of timing how to put it together."
Timing has slowed their schedule already. AHG had planned to open the Johnny Western Theatre by Labor Day but they are still waiting for a final commitment from Tulsa based Murphy Brothers to operate the park.
"Whatever decision they make, we're comfortable with,” said Spangler. “’Cause we know we have a back up plan to open the park and that's what's most important for Park City."
Spangler says they're still deciding whether to keep the Wild West world name, but says there will be big changes including more extreme rides for young adults including a roller coaster that can be seen from I-135.
"We're talking about going more toward an extreme ride for our marketing research indicates you need a large roller coaster, you need a bungee jumping station, you need what they call a plunge station where put people on a tether and use those,” said Spangler. “Those are safe rides and that's what young adults want to do."
Spangler says he believes originally the park failed because it didn't attract young adults and because it was under capitalized. Those are mistakes his company won't make.
"I just have a lot of faith in him and they're not gonna put a $2.1 million dollar investment there and just let it sit," added Park City Mayor Dee Stuart.
Spangler says AHG plans to invest another $12 to $15 million to get the park ready and hopes to start moving rides in October or November.
