Teen injured in hit-and-run accident

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, September 16, 2008 – Wichita police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that sent a 16-year-old to the hospital with serious injuries.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. Tuesday in the 3600 block of S. Seneca when a 16-year-old boy was hit while crossing a crosswalk on his bicycle.

Police say a van struck him and then fled the scene. The vehicle was found in the South High School parking lot and police took a 17-year-old girl in for questioning.

With school back in full swing, police are urging drivers to be caution of students going to and from school.

"We would obviously ask that drivers in the morning, with school being back in session, to be attentive to kids that are out here on bikes and walking and making their way to and from school so we can avoid this happening any more this year,” said Capt. John Speer with the Wichita Police Department.

The 16-year-old suffered from head injuries and at last check was in fair condition at a Wichita hospital.
