Greensburg from the air today

By Jessica Oakley

GREENSBURG, Kansas, October 10, 2008 – A symbolic milestone was reached in Greensburg Friday as ground was broken for the new city hall. The building, on Main Street, is expected to be complete next spring.

But on the big day for the community’s rebuilding efforts, the military gave KSN’s Chanda Brown a unique chance to fly in a Blackhawk helicopter to get a view of the many signs of progress from above.

“Totally different – we see a city again,” said Kansas Adjutant General Tod Bunting. “I mean there is still some work to be done, but the church is coming back, the businesses, lots of homes and green grass.”

“People have been very patient and waiting for the plans to be completed and the designs to be completed, but now they need to see buildings going up,” said Greensburg City Administrator Steve Hewitt. “You gotta see things happen. You’ve gotta hear the hammers hammering and the construction go on.”

And in deed there is a huge difference between how Greensburg looked from the sky days after the tornado and how it looks today.
