Liberal, Kansas toddler dies from E.coli

By Anthony Powell

LIBERAL, Kansas October 11, 2008 (AP) - A mayor in southwest Kansas says an 18-month-old boy in his town has died from E.coli infection and the toddler's brother is recovering from the same disease.

Liberal Mayor Joe Denoyer says Tanner Edgar Strickland died Wednesday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. His brother has now been released from Wesley Medical Center. It is not known what caused the boys to capture the disease. The mayor says the disease is contained within the immediate family and there is no danger to the public.

Denoyer and Seward County Health Department Director Martha Brown say the incident is contained within the immediate family. Brown said health officials are talking to everyone who might have come into contact with the children.

Brown is urging citizens to practice safe food handling techniques and to wash hands frequently as standard precautions
