Residents displaced by deadly tornado

By Kevin White

GREENSBURG, Kansas, May 5, 2007 -- Greensburg used to be their home but for the near future at least, the high school in the nearby town of Haviland will be home to dozens of Greensburg residents. Many of those could be seen outside of the shelter Saturday staring into space wondering what hit them. For others, you had to worry about what the shock may do to them -- old and young, coping together.

Little Josh Santos felt as though the monster tornado was a real monster.

"It was like someone was trying to catch you and kill you."

The tornado offered the most unfriendly welcome imaginable to Kevin and Melissa Hillhouse.

"We just moved to Greensburg a week ago," said Kevin. "We just moved to town and been in our house one week."

But what an end to the week it would be. The HIllhouse's heard the sirens but unfamiliar with tornadoes, they found themselves somewhat paralyzed.

"I asked my neighbor and he said 'get to your cellar' so we went to our cellar," said Kevin. "Thank God we had a cellar."

But when the twister hit, they were praying to God after their storm cellar door was sucked off.

"We were pushed up against the walls. It was trying to suck us out. One of the water pipes in the cellar went through the roof of the concrete and I said 'well there goes the house' because it was connected to the rest of the house and it was gone -- everything."

The Hillhouse family is now moving back to Arkansas after experiencing this deadly storm.
