News of survival emerges

By Kevin White

GREENSBURG, Kansas, May 7, 2007 -- One man's story has captured the attention of the state and the nation. The world's oldest soda jerk, Richard Huckriede, was missing after the Greensburg tornado. We were flooded with e-mails and calls asking if he was all right. We now know that he has been found alive and well.

Richard returned Monday to see where he had worked for years as a soda jerk. Like nearly all Greensburg residents, Richard lost everything in the tornado. Hunter Drug, the famous soda shop where he has worked all his life is now just a pile of rubble.

He is now staying with his sister. There is no word yet if he plans to rebuild the store.

A victim of the tornado thought to be another casualty is still clinging to life. Stafford County Deputy Sheriff Tim Buckman was injured trying to help others in the aftermath of the storm.

Officials say it is amazing that the deputy was even found.

"Our first report of his whereabouts came from a 911 call from a cell phone of a person from out of state that stopped on the side of the highway after the storm," said Jason Bolt, EMS director, Stafford County. "He said he was looking out his passenger side window to the south and in a lightning flash saw a glimpse of a white car in a field, and made the 911 call to us to report the vehicle."

Deputy Buckman is at Via Christi-Saint Francis Hospital here in Wichita and is still listed in critical condition.
