GREENSBURG, Kansas, May 7, 2007 -- It has been a rough couple of days for the people of Greensburg after that huge tornado devastated the town Friday night.
Right now, residents are being allowed back into their homes to survey the damage and gather up any belongings they can find in the rubble.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is on the ground helping to coordinate efforts to bring in supplies.
And the Stafford County Deputy thought to have died in the tornado is still in critical condition at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
Days later, the cleanup continues and the task is daunting. From the air, you can recognize the difficulty that residents, rescue crews, and others helping face.
But there is some encouraging news coming out Monday. Word was received Monday that another survivor was found late Sunday night buried under a large pile of rubble. There is no detailed information yet on the survivor's condition.
If you know anything about Greensburg, their claim to fame is the World's Largest Hand Dug Well and the souvenir shop on the site which housed the largest meteorite ever found. That meteorite has been missing since the tornado destroyed the shop. It can now be reported that the 1,000-pound meteorite has been found.
Authorities are considering their options for rebuilding the infrastructure of the town.
"The search and rescue continues because we still have optimism that we will find more people alive," said a spokesman for the Kansas Highway Patrol. "Around here, as soon as that happened, the spirits raised considerably. You've got people around here that are extremely exhausted. They are running on total adrenaline and that's one of the things that's going to help these people because it gives them a little bit of a shot and they've got some hope."
There were obviously a lot of tears as residents were allowed back into town Monday morning as they surveyed the destruction and smile as they saw their neighbors who had survived.
There is a news conference planned for 3:30 p.m. Monday from Governor Sebelius and FEMA. We will bring you that information as we can.
