Explosion and fire closes Wichita City Hall Monday

By Rachel Sommerfeld

Wichita, Kansas September 17 -- There was an explosion late Sunday night, in the basement of the Wichita city building -- and it will shut down city business on Monday.

The first crews were called to City Hall around midnight. A transformer had exploded in the basement, causing some damage to that immediate area and smoke to spread throughout several floors.

One person -- who was doing building maintenance in the area -- suffered minor injures and smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The sprinkler system was able to prevent the fire from spreading.

"Actually when the explosion occurred, because of the heat the sprinkler went off and kept that fire in check and prevented further damage in that area, it was a good thing," said Capt. Bill Wenzel, Wichita Fire Department.

City employees should not report to work Monday. The electricity will be shut down for at least part of the day, as the investigation continues.  For updates, City Hall-based employees should call the emergency call-in line at 352-4888.
