BENTON, Kansas Sept. 22, 2007 - They touched down from all over North America. Each landing, representing a piece of Wichita history.
"It's really neat to see the machines and the people that fly em," Cessna 195 owner Michael Meloche said.
Meloche. who is from San Diego, is just one of dozens of plane enthusiasts who have propelled their way to Benton this weekend. The reason is that they're all owners of the Cessna 195, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The once state of the art plane was born right here in Wichita.
"It's a very distinct airplane with a very distinct sound," plane enthusiast Ron Huckins said. "It's a very nostalgic airplane."
The Cessna 195 is the last Cessna plane to be made with a radial engine and the first to feature an all-metal body.
"It's just a piece of history, and these people have put a lot of work into it to preserve it for future generations," Meloche said.
The 75 Cessna 195 planes on display make this the largest gathering in history. Most of the owners salvaged the planes and completely restored them. Returning them to what they once were -- a sleek aircraft designed for business travel.
"I am in awe every time I look at it, and every time I get into it," Meloche said.
