Despite record prices, wheat supply is low in some areas

By Josh Witsman

HUTCHINSON, KS. (AP) - Many Kansas wheat farmers say they are not seeing a profit. Despite record prices, the wheat supply is low in some areas, and farmers are taking the hit.

They say the June wheat crop was one of the worst in a decade. The farmers blame drought, an April freeze, and too much rain in South-Central and Southeastern Kansas.

In Western Kansas, a long drought broke this year and led to one of the best wheat crops in the region's history, but most farmers still won't get close to eight-dollars-a-bushel.

Marsha Boswell, with Kansas Wheat, says the high prices are being caused by a short crop across the world, not just in Kansas.
