Update 6/14: Derek Wheeler's body was recovered at approximately 8:00 am Friday morning on the shoreline of Boldt Bluff at Kanopolis Lake. Wheeler is presumed drowned. His body will be examined but no foul play is suspected.
KANOPOLIS LAKE, Kansas -- Crews were back on the scene at Kanopolis Lake Wednesday searching for a teen who went missing early Tuesday morning.
Three teens were kayaking on Kanopolis Lake when one of the kayaks overturned.
The other teens went to help, and their boats tipped over as well.
Eighteen-year-old Derek Wheeler of Salina is still missing.
The search is focusing on the south side of the lake. The sheriff says the clock is ticking right now.
"There's going to come a point that if we don't find the body, that we're just going to have to start backing away. You know. You're going to run out of options to look at," said Tracy Ploutz, Ellsworth County Sheriff.
The sheriff says they had a K-9 team out at the lake today but still no luck in finding the teen.
The students on the school bus were not injured.
