Colyer declines KSNW-TV appearance ahead of August primary

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) - Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer is the first of the major candidates to decline KSN’s invitation to participate in a televised non-partisan forum ahead of the August primary.

The forum, which will air at 7 p.m. July 26 on KSNW and other NBC affiliate stations in the state, is only open to candidates who meet strict qualification requirements.

Republican Jim Barnett will join democrat candidates Carl Brewer, Laura Kelly and Josh Svaty. The four have publicly announced they’ll participate.

Independent Greg Orman, and GOP candidates Kris Kobach and Ken Selzer, have not yet committed.

Selzer’s campaign has responded, “It’s too early to commit to the forum due to it being very close to the primary.”

Colyer, Kobach and Selzer have promised the Kansas Republican Party they will not take part in debates that don’t meet the GOP’s guidelines for what questions can be asked.

KSNW believes it is our journalistic duty to present an open forum in which candidates can be asked questions without restrictions. Our invitation to participate remains open to the three qualified candidates.
