WICHITA, KansasAround 50 people are homeless after fire ripped through a Wichita apartment complex.

It started just after midnight at the Ashbury Court Apartments in the 1900 block of S. Woodlawn. Firefighters say when they arrived smoke and flames were billowing out of the building. That building is a total loss.

The first company of firefighters immediately called for backup when they saw the blaze. No one was hurt, but dozens are left looking for homes – many of them with nothing left but the clothes on their backs.

Earscell Hunter has a hard time talking about all the things she lost after her apartment building caught on fire.

“Run out of the house with nothing,” she said. “I'm screaming, making up a scene and everybody is just trying to follow me and everybody comes out of their house like,'what's going on?' and I’m banging on peoples’ doors downstairs, trying to get them out of their house cause it was burning fast - I promise.”

Earscell is just one of the many left homeless by the fire. Three fire companies were needed to help douse the flames and control the fire.

The Red Cross is now helping victims of the fire find food, clothes and shelter. For Earscell Hunter, her plans are to wash the clothes she was able to salvage and then try to start over.

“It's a pain oh my goodness,” she said. “You just don't understand; especially when you're doing so good and then something like this happens. You just don't know what to do.”

Firefighters tell KSN they believe they’ve determined the cause of the fire, but will wait until Wednesday before they release the information.
