Wichita, Kansas - For years Dr. George Tiller faced abortion protests outside his clinic. Now the abortion protests are moving north to Bellevue, Nebraska for the weekend.
Nebraska late-term abortion provider, Dr. LeRoy Carhart, says abortion protests are nothing new to him. He used to work on a part-time basis for Dr. Tiller.
"Sure, I'm aware they'll be here protesting this week," says carhart.
Police in Belleview are gearing up for protesters on both sides by stationing patrol cars throughout the neighborhood where Dr. Carhart performs abortions.
Captain Herb Evers is with the Bellevue Police department. "Base purpose in all these plans," says Evers, "is to keep the peace, protect the people that live in, work in or visit Bellevue."
A Wichita contingent of anti-abortion activists is on the way to Nebraska to join the protest, led by Nebraskans Unified For Life.
Ann Marie Bowen with Nebraskans Unified For Life says the group will, "Offer support and counsel to women who are in a crisis pregnancy or think they're pregnant."
Carhart says, even with the protests, he will continue his work. He also says he will continue to try and find a building in Wichita so he can move his abortion and women's care services business to Kansas.
Carhart says the demand for women's services remains. "Dr. Tiller was in Wichita for thirty years and during that time he did probably 80-thousand abortions," says Carhart.
"Every one of those patients brought with them one or two or more people supporting them in their beliefs and their choices."
The NOW organization of Nebraska is planning a counter protest.
