WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita’s aircraft workers hope there’s still strength in numbers as they rally to save Kansas jobs.
Workers rallying in Old Town say they are tired of giving and need to get something back. They are in the middle of negotiations with Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft. KSN is told those negotiations are going down to the wire and they will have to vote on the 18th.The focus of the rally is on jobs and keeping job security. Union representatives said negotiations are tough right now.“We have opened negotiations to see if we can keep that plant open, save that facility,” said Steve Rooney with District Machinists union Local #70. “We're in a tough fight here. We're having to compete not only against our jobs leaving and going out of this country but other states trying to steal them.”Many of those out of several hundred that showed up tell KSN they don’t like the idea of a strike, but they do want to get their point across to management. The union president says he needs help keeping jobs in Kansas and he hopes Governor Mark Parkinson will get involved next week. State incentives have already helped keep work at Learjet in Wichita.
