WICHITA, KS. - A Special Olympics athlete is in critical condition after collapsing at a track and field event at Cessna Stadium Sunday morning. It's believed he suffered some sort of seizure.
Medical personnel rushed to help him and he was quickly transported to Wesley Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. An initial report indicated the patient had died, but that turned out to be incorrect.
Officials say it's too soon to tell if the heat and humidity played a role in his collapse. "We try to make sure the athletes stay hydrated and drink plenty of water," said David Niensted of the Wichita Police Department.
Officials have not released the name of the athlete.
