WICHITA, Kansas – New legislation has the blind taking to the streets protesting over a proposal to pay them less than everyone else. Blind activists call the bill "insulting."

Under current law, employers can petition the labor department to allow them to pay disabled workers based on their actual productivity rather than basing their wages on an hourly rate.

Advocates for the blind say a clause in the Workforce Investment Act being debated in Washington would make it easier for businesses to continue the practice.

"That is unjust. That is unequal. That is discrimatory," said Donna Wood, president of the Kansas chapter of the National Federation of the Blind

Many advocacy groups for the disabled are in favor of the act, saying it makes it easier for employers to hire disabled workers.

His office released a statement saying "Senator Roberts has a long history working for those with disabilities. While he appreciates the views of the National Federation of the Blind, he is also hearing from groups who feel differently about this issue. So, before any changes are made, he wants to fully understand the consequences, and will continue to reach out and study it."

According to the story, some advocates for those with disabilities actually SUPPORT the bill because they think it will make it easier for employers to hire disabled people. I disagree. I think what such a bill will ultimately do is make it EASIER for EMPLOYERS to TAKE ADVANTAGE of disabled people. For example, employers may find it appealing to hire disabled people simply because the employer is looking at them as nice, CHEAP labor and knows that they can hire a disabled person for cheaper than a non-disabled person. Because they’ll know they can screw them over LEGALLY now. And because of that very scenario, it will drive down wages for EVERYONE (including non-disabled people) – similar to the same effect that outsourcing jobs to lower-wage countries like Mexico and China has on wages here in the U.S. This bill is so discriminatory that it would likely be challenged in court if it ever passed. But still SHAME on Sen. Roberts for supporting this bill!!!!

Im not even blind and I find this very offensive they are people just like us they maybe blind but they cant help that. Its wrong how some morons in our government wants to do this to them they deserve to be paid as much as anyone else working a minimum wage job at least they are putting forth the effort unlike some of these other people who dont work and live off of welfare.

Seriously? Really are people that stupid that they would outright try and pay someone less because of their disability? Where did they come up with this anyway? Were they all sitting around wondering how they could be anymore stupid?
