City no longer negotiating for riverfront YMCA

WICHITA, Kansas – A new downtown YMCA will not be built on the river after all. The city and the YMCA had been negotiating on land north of the Broadview Hotel at 1st St. and Waco.

The mayor announced the development during his State of the City Address at the beginning of the year. But Thursday the YMCA told the city it was just too expensive to build by the river and instead it will construct a new YMCA on the land it currently owns downtown.

"We just concluded that it's gonna be better to serve the needs and better for the Y where we are now,” said Thomas Lasater, president of YMCA Board of Directors.

The mayor tells KSN he’s disappointed. The city will now look into options on what to do with the land.
