WICHITA, Kansas – A 17 year old faces charges after his friend is killed while the two were playing with a gun in south Wichita Sunday.

Officers released few details at the home shortly after the shooting.

"I'm not going to comment on the shooting at this point,” said Sgt. Jim Bratt with the Wichita Police Department on Sunday. “Like I said it's currently under investigation."

But now police say 16-year-old Eric Aleman was shot in the head while he and his friend played with a handgun. Eight people were in the home, but only the two teens were in the basement bedroom where the shooting happened. Initially, witnesses said several people were seen running from the home. Investigators later learned why.

"One was actually the brother of the victim who was running home to tell his father and then they all returned to the scene and they were all interviewed,” said Lt. Landwehr with the Wichita Police Department.

After those interviews officers arrested the victim’s friend.

"That 17 year old was booked into a juvenile detention facility, arrested for involuntary manslaughter,” Lt. Landwehr said.

Police did recover the gun. It was not registered, but investigators believe the gun belonged to the 17 year old. They are now trying to trace where it came from. The case is now headed to the district attorney. It will be up to that office to determine if charges will move forward.

Aleman’s death is the 15th homicide reported in Wichita so far this year.
